Freaks of Nature is a comedy / horror mashup that pokes fun at many of the standard tropes of vampire, zombie, alien ,monster and teen angst/ romance movies. I know that sounds like a lot to throw into one little film, but it does work for the most part. I hadn’t heard anything about Freaks of Nature when it hit movie screens last fall and knew nothing about it when I had the opportunity to watch it instead of that train wreck of a Super Bowl. Freaks of Natures doesn’t take itself too seriously and the cast of familiar character actors seems to be having fun with the material.
Freaks of Nature takes place in a sort of alternate reality small town USA, where humans, vampires and zombies live together in peace, if not harmony. The story follows Dag, a kind of shy, nice guy who thinks he is in love with Lorelei [Vanessa Hudgens], the virginal girl next door. Love is blind, because everyone one else can tell Lorelei is a manipulating slut, who only is using Dag to hold her drug stash and drive her around. Dag’s nerdy, friend Ned tries to tell him this, but it falls on deaf ears.
Ned has his own problems. His older brother, Chaz Jr.is the school’s top jock and Lorelei’s boyfriend [naturally], who constantly over shadows his genius brother. Ned develops an attraction for Jenna Zombie [Mae Whitman] and lets her eat his foot so he can become a zombie to spite his parents, but they don’t even notice
The third main character is sweet, Petra who has a Twilight sized crush on vampire pretty boy, Milan Pinache [Ed Westwick]. Petra, just wants to lose her virginity but Milan doesn’t want sex [he gets that from Lorelei], he wants her blood. Petra soon wakes up to find out she has become a vampire, shunned by her schoolmates and dumped by Milan.
If you think this sounds crazy, wait till the giant alien spaceship arrives. The town goes postal and the various groups begin attacking each other in spite of the aliens invading. Our three heroes are thrown together and must find a way not to kill each other long enough to unite the town and stop the alien attack.
Freaks of Nature is a silly, fun movie that leaves no genre safe from a joke or two. Freaks of Nature is now out on HD and Blu-ray, check it out if you want your horror on the funny side.
